Category titles displayed with unwanted characters

When my categories are displayed they have extra characters like "l_" preceding the title and "->" following the title.

Does anyone have any idea what the cause is?

Can you explain the purpose of the separators?

It's just a visual cue to the customer that there's additional information after the name (a count or a hierarchy).

i think it's a not very good visual cue, and agree with the OP when they describe them as 'unwanted'.

if you have the font-awesome library loaded with your template, i have found the following to look significantly better:

for categories separator:
&nbsp;<i class="fas fa-level-down-alt"></i>

for Categories Separator between the Category Name and Sub Categories:
<i class="fas fa-long-arrow-right"></i>&nbsp;

use at your own peril!
