New Products index after 2.0

I'm not sure how I was able to do this, but on my old 1.5.8a site (I moved it here so I still have access to compare) even though most of my products were added years ago, I somehow managed to make the site list new products for each month as if they were new / recently added which helped fill the main page. When I upgraded to 2.0, I lost that so my main page is mostly blank now with the exception of my left / right layout boxes. Any idea what I would need to do, to get that back?

Thanks in advance, here is the newly updated site for comparison. In the meantime just to fill a blank area, I added some specials and featured items for now until I can figure out how to duplicate what I had.
