How do I cancel an order without deleting it?

There are times when I have to cancel an order, but I would like to keep a record of it. How do I cancel the order, return the inventory so it is available again, but keep a record of the order?

PS My store is running the version that came out before 1.3. I believe it is 1.27d

You can go into the localization drop down in admin and create a new order title called canceled

There is no built-in facility for both marking an order cancelled AND returning inventory to stock.

We may consider that in the Admin rewrite in a later version

Thank you for the quick response. I had already created the "Order Cancelled" option, but the problem is the inventory is still wrong.

BUT, I can go back in and manually put in the inventory... right?
