Default Tax laws for selling from Canada?

    Hi Canadians! :)

I need to set up a store for an author that sells a small book. The book will be sold from Ontario Canada and will be available worldwide.

What are the tax laws for Ontario? When do I charge for GST & PST and when do I charge GST only? What about selling to USA? Do I must charge US customers GST&PST?

    Thanks!!!

    Melissa

The laws are still sketchy much like in the US.

You would need to charge PST on the book for ontario residents. I had a big long discussion with my roomate (business major) who looked into it in detail. It only became more confusing. The situations to charge PST are based on where the sale takes place. What the government want to tell you is that if you're on a companies website then you are "at the store site" meaning PST must be charged (regardless of where you actually are).

I'm pretty sure you don't have to start charging GST until you make over 30K / year. When you do though you must charge it regardless of location.

You should really consult your tax accountant and/or local tax authority.
