Default Lost American trying to set up VAT for someone

    Hi there guys,

I've set up this cart a couple of times, and to date, defining taxes has been easy for me because it was state tax, and really didn't cause a problem.

I am trying to help someone set up a cart located in the Netherlands, and I'm having a problem settting up VAT(BTW)

    here's what she told me:
vat tax is called btw tax here. It is charged within Europe and is 19%
My problem is that I don't know how to define a tax for a whole country. The dropdown when looking at the FL tax only shows Florida, so I imagine that I create a new zone, but how do I choose a country as the zone, or is that not what I'm supposed to do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,

    I'm no expert on VAT.
But if you read through the Canada setup you'll get an idea of how things work.

As to setting up a zone for an entire country, just do it:
    - create the zone definition, give it a name/description
    - click details
    - add the country with all its related zones

then link that zone to the VAT/BTW tax rate of 19%

Hi there Dr.Byte, and thanks for taking the time to reply.

I read your tutorial for Canada, and it helped greatly in understanding what each aspect of the taxes, but I'm slightly befuddled concerning the VAT still.

I'm to create a tax Zone(Europe, description VAT) add each country seperately that the tax should apply to?

If this is indeed the case, does someone have a list of the countries that VAT would pertain to?

    thanks,
