admin rename with upgrades

Hi. I have learned most of all from this forum what it is like to be on the other side; It has made me a much better moderator on our site. I do thank you, especially DrByte and Ajeh for your examples of long suffering with us kayakers turned coders.

I'm wondering...after a tearful, frustrated day of upgrading to 1.3.0.2...Is there a step I'm missing when I run zc_install to upgrade the database? I always have to go back and rename my admin and upload the configure file with reference to the changed name.

I have to say I am astounded that with all the files having the same names, but different paths, how few mistakes I make replacing them....which is more a tribute to the layout of the zencart than to my wits...which are at an end for today.

Those are the proper steps ...

You rename for protection so that no one, including us know what you do ...

Then to upgrade to rename back to assure a proper upgrade ...

Backups of the database and website before attempting an upgrade is the key ...

Utilizing a practice upgrade directory is also a help because if you moof up in practice you can always start over until you have your notes organized to list all the steps you may need for your own personal upgrade experience ...

Okay - so to take advice given here -

• I am now making a proper /test dir and uploading 1.3.0.2 into it. [

• Then, I've downloaded the "Beyond Compare" software as per Ajeh to compare files (its all about having the right tools)

• Then- I'll test this site and add my file modifications

• Finally - I'll upload it to my live directory

• All new contribs will be uploaded to the test dir *before* I start breaking other things

I think I'm finally getting it. One last questions on this - what am I not supposed to change and what am I supposed to copy to: - my Z12_template file right?

When building your /test site or /new_shop

The extra thought here is ...

Everything you need to do is "techncially" being done in /new_shop

If it takes 5 minutes or a week or 3 weeks ... /new_shop has everything *except* the current up to the moment Live database ...

If you were to keep notes on your database changes as you are working on your /new_shop ... you could, more or less, at the end of all your work ...

1 backup your Live Shop database ...

2 backup your /new_shop database ...

3 drop the tables in the /new_shop database

4 load the backup of the Live shop database into the /new_shop database

5 re-run the /zc_install and UPGRADE the /new_shop database again

6 read your notes and update any additional changes you made to the database

7 test test test the /new_shop

if all is working ...

8 set the Live Site Down for Maintenance ...

9 repeat steps 1 through 7

if all is working ...

10 update the 2 configure.php files in the /new_shop to your Live Site PATH ONLY do not change the database as your /new_shop database will become your Live Database

11 Rename your Live Shop /old_shop

12 Rename your /new_shop to whatever your Live shop was, such as /catalog

13 test test test

if all is working ...

Turn Off Down for Maintenance ...
