Pls help me. Newbie in Credit Card Payment

Hi all, my first time creating an online store. The credit card module in zen cart is not SSL protected, is it still safe for my customers? How do I continue processing the payment once I get their credit card information. Do i seek a bank service for this? What other external credit card service are there besides Worldpay (extremely too costly) Paypal. Is it safer to use an external party? Please advise thanks.

SSL is based on your configuration for your site ...

You have to turn that on for the secure pages to come up secure ...

This is done in the files:
/includes/configure.php

/admin/includes/configure.php

You need to find out what your secure URL is, set it and then enable it ...

Then how do I proceed with the credit card payment once I get their CC info? Do i need to approach one of the local bank service? Are there any cheaper external credit card payment party?
