It's always a good thing to make a backup before attempting anything. The reason why you lost your database entries after re-installing from scratch, (even if you leave your database readings as is), the Zen-Cart installation will completely override your previous settings and reset them into their default ones.
Assuming you did a backup of the current version of Zen-Cart, for your database, you can simply restore your previous database settings into the current one.
Warning: Doing so on a test folder store, before doing so on your live store, would be more than highly recommended to make sure that everything's working great. Otherwise, you might, (and will), end up with catastrophic results.
