this customer: www.jefoss.com/catalog gets this error anytime someone is trying to checkout. how do i fix this and what is the cause of it to prevent it in the future?

That error suggests something wrong with a database-query. It's usually caused by a mismatch in upgrading customized files, or a syntax error in custom code.

okay-i downloaded WinMerge and looked at all the files that were different. and every spot that was different from the original was where i inserted the Purchase Order mod. I'm really not sure how to fix this or what steps I need to take. This error occurs when I am trying to order from a CC and not the PO.
any suggestions?!

Did your purchase order mod have some SQL / database components to install that you missed doing?
