I have expired coupons that are staying in the active list. I checked the DB and they are listed as "Y" under coupon active.

This is a little confusing ...
If you have a coupon that expires ... while the table says it is active as in coupon_active = Y ...
That is for you to be able to edit, etc. as once coupon_active = N it cannot be edited ...
However, if I try to use that coupon ... it is evaluated on the date and will not be accepted and the customer will be told that it is expired ...

linda I believe you have had too much coffee because I read your reply many times and I am not sure what your are saying. Does a coupon expire on the experation date and set coupon_active to "N" on its own, when I check the coupon list in the admin or does someone have to try and use that coupon after it has expired and is denied to get the coupon_active to change from Y to N.

After reading your post again it appears that you are stating that if coupon_active=N then I shouldn't be able to edit it. Wrong, in my case, the one coupon that I have that does show as inactive in the admin and is also listed as coupon_active=N in the DB is still able to be edited.
I assume it is still able to be edited so that I could change the dates and use it again if I wanted.

coupon_active becomes N only when you "delete" a coupon.
otherwise, expiration dates rule its usability by customers

coupon_status? I thought we were talking about coupon_active.
Wouldn't "deleting" the coupon make it disappear, not just move to inactive. The coupon that shows in my inactive list in the admin went there all by itself I didn't move it, couldn't if I wanted to from the admin, and I know I wasn't in the DB playin' around.
So the question is - When a coupon expires on the date that I set does it become "inactive" and then does it show on the inactive list?
If the answer to that question is yes to both parts then the next question is - How come coupons that I have that have expired are not in the inactive list, they are still in the active list (I do realize that if someone tried to use them they would be denied based on ther expiration date).

coupon_active long night ...
Deleting just masks or hides the Discount Coupon ...
What if you made a coupon 2 months ago that expired a month ago and a customer complaining etc. you need a way to see, read etc.
For record keeping, Discount Coupons expire but they are not physically deleted or really removed for future reference ...
So you don't need to see them, you can Delete or set to Inactive ...

ok, thanks Linda got it now. Missed your post while I was typing. I now uderstand how it works. I see that inactive coupons is more of an archive of old coupons to be used as a history of coupon activity
