How to change the sorting of the all products listing?

I'd like to be able to control how the products are ordered in both the all products listing and the featured products listing. Any idea how? Sorting them arbitarily would be great, but having them sorted by category would also work (books before posters before ebooks, etc...that's what I am after).

You could customize this so use the master_categories_id if you do not use Linked Products, or a more difficult sort would be to include the categories_description table via the products_to_categories relationship ...

This could get complicated on the Sort Order dropdown depending on what you want that to do, if anything, once the customer sets their own sort order ...

Thanks for the quick reply. I can see what the master category id is for each product, but how do I sort by it? As for the dropdown, I don't have a ton of products so removing it from the page should be fine.

Sorting via the category description seems interesting, but perhaps overkill. Where is that code? Where do I modify stuff like that?

If you don't have "a ton of products", how's about changing the product sort order and changing Admin -> Configuration -> All Listing -> Display Product Display to 8? Same with Featured Listing.

You could reserve product sort orders for books(Novels?) in the 100 - 199 range, posters to the 200 - 299, and eBoks to 300 - 399. Even if you had no posters, everything would be by the order you want and, when you added posters, they would "slide" right in where you want them.

Just my 1.3786 cents worth (inflation, don't ya know)
