I would like to list out all categories on a page and have an image and some descriptive text corresponding to each category, with a "Browse" link: on clicking which the visitor can start browsing the items under that category.

Try these after you have some items added:

admin > config > layout settings > Categories - Always Show on Main Page

admin > config > layout settings > Categories - Always Show on Main Page

and maybe ac couple of others for sub cats depending on how you want this to appear for your customers

It worked!

The only limitation being I can't add descriptive text and the way it looks is not the way I want.

I think, I need to educate myself a bit in order to customize how it looks

Can I display the product categories without the Name of the Category, using only the corresponding image? I would embed the Category name in the image corresponding to the Category.
