I made no changes and now new customers can't create accounts

The last customer to successfully create an account was on 11/01/2006. Since then I've got an email from a potential customer stating that he cannont create a new account. I went to create a test account and no matter what i enter, i get this:

Please try again. Our system requires at least 1 characters.

but all fields are full! again, I made no changes to the cart between now and then. any ideas?

I did just create an account. I think you will find that you have made "forum nickname' a required field. Did you rename that from something else? In any case, it should not be a required field. Check all of your required fields, make sure required is really warranted. For example, make sure company and fax number are not required. And I really advise you to lose the requirement for birth date. That's a turn off.

ug, i don't ever remember seeing forum nick name on there ever before. how bizarre... now if i could just remember where to shut that off...
