USPS and UPS insurance

I need to offer insurance for both USPS and UPS. I have downloaded and installed the optional insurance module. It is set to calculate USPS insurance and appears to be working great. Want I want to happen is to have another module that is set to calculate by increment for the UPS insurance. The customer will check the box on the order totals pages that corresponds to the shipping method that they selected. If I knew php, I'm sure I could modify the current optional insurance module, call it upsinsurance, and have no problem, but I don't know php. Is there anyone who has done something similar, or can tell me how to modify what I've got to do what I want?

Is there a reason that insurance is not automatic? Don't know if this will work for you or not but here's what I do: I simply add a handling fee onto all the shipping options of $1.50 to cover insurance costs. If have more expensive items, your handling could be more. As a customer, I like to see things built in instead of having to choose my insurance options. Hopefully that is helpful

Yes, I would prefer that insurance could be built in as simply as that, but when you have products that range in price from $4.98 to over $3000.00. It is rather difficult to add a handling fee that would work for most products.
