Default Site too wide for browser

I have the purpleshades template and my monitor is widescreen but the website still has to be scrolled left to right to look at the full page.

Could you please take a look at www.icklebits.co.uk and let me know how to get rid of that extra inch or two on the right please?

    Thanks.

    D

Idea or Suggestion Re: Site too wide for browser

    Hi D,

Try doing something with your #mainWrapper in the stylesheet. Maybe adding a max width like so:
    max-width:800px

[FONT=Verdana]...will help. Or try something else but I think it should be #mainWrapper

    Good luck!

First off, your logo image is 1008 px wide plus the "Tagline here" lurking on the right, so you've written off looking good in 800x600 monitors.

You have tables nested three deep in your header, including one that takes up 200 or so px between the logo and tagline with no apparent purpose. I can see it displayed in view source, but can't tell where it comes from. This is the one causing your immediate problem.

There's not much more I can say without seeing your source files. I'm not familiar enough with the antiquated table system to tell you why the elements bulk up like that.

Thanks for your replys. I forgot to mention that I'm new to all this and kind of need step by step instructions on how to fix things.

Its the purpleshades template and that's basically as much as I know.

You wanted to see my source files...how do I do that?

    (sorry )

Ok, I don't have time to really investigate this now, but you do have
    Code:
    <td width="125" valign="top"><a href="./"><img src="includes/templates/purpleshades/images/postage_logo.jpg" alt="Home Page" border="0"></a></td>
    <td width="251"> <table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="251">
The first td has a width of 125px, but holds an image which is 1008px wide. That may be a problem.

The second td has a width of 251px, and holds(?) a table also defined at 251px wide, but there is no apparent purpose for the whole thing.

There are no tags (classes/IDs) that a stylesheet could use to affect the individual parts here.

Someone familiar with table design will have to sort this out.

Probably the 1.3.0 Classic template which was still full of tables.
Time to change that as it will be harder to maintain with every new version.

I've just had an email from a customer saying that the login button on the following page is hidden from view behind the "important links" box. Now I don't understand that as it looks perfectly okay on my screen. See what you can see:

    http://icklebits.co.uk/index.php?main_page=login

How do I go about replacing templates?

    Thanks

I don't see the login box hidden either; it may be a certain browser that handles confusing HTML differently than others. There are a bunch of conflicting width directions being given and one interpretation may keep the right sidebar from going as far to the right as it is being pushed. Just a guess.

Checking source I see that it is the Purpleshades template. I don't know how many modifications have been made to it - I suspect not many other than the huge logo, and widening the sideboxes. The original logo space was probably set for about 400px wide and is trying to hold a 1008px image.

Kobra has built a new CSS-based version of Purpleshades, and downloading that may help. It should have instructions in the readme.txt file for installation. Post in the Purpleshades support thread (in Contributed Templates) for help.

You will need to make wider sidebox header & footer background images by editing the present ones in a graphics editor like Photoshop.
