Suspension from excessive resources all of a sudden

My host recently suspended me, and I believe it was because my zencart was taking up excessive resources. They basically said "fix it or get lost." Thing is, I have been rhunning zencart for 1.5 years without a problem. Do you think this could be because I was running an older version? I can't remember the version off the top of my head, but my index.php file says this: // $Id: index.php 886 2005-01-05 07:00:34Z birdbrain $

Does anyone have any recommendations?

My host provided me with this information:

Your account was suspended today for utilizing excessive resources on our server and causing it to come near to crashing. We have suspended your account until you contact us to resolve the issue. Here is some information we gathered about the processes running at the time:

I am also having this exact same problem.
Zen cart has been running fine for over a year and all of a sudden our account has been suspended by the host for excessive resource use.

Unfortunately this installation was done before I came on the project. I wasn't the one who installed it, or built it, or really had anything to do with it. That person is gone, and now I'm here. Long story short I wouldn't know a change if I saw one.

I don't mind digging in the code, but I really have no idea what I should be looking for. It's like when your car breaks down and you pop the hood hoping whatever is broken is obvious. Unfortunately nothing I saw was obvious...

As far as date the file was modified, nothing has been touched since before I got here. As far back as 5/17/2005

you need to take a look in the folders,
look for anything that has been modified recently,
the modified dates will be displayed in the ftp

start by looking in the images folders,
and also view src on the index.php

see if you see anything about an iframe

I looked through the images folder so far and nothing has been updated within the past year.

I looked in the src of index.php, as well as the actual code and didn't find anything having to do with an iframe.

I'll continue to look through the remaining folders, but so far have found no files that have been updated within a year, some older.

The index.php file has been updated recently, but that's from our host renaming the file to stop the resources being consumed.

Perhaps you've suddenly been indexed by another search engine, and while they're spidering your site to index all the links ... it suddenly caused your site to use a lot of system resources. Depending on the size of your site, this could take an hour or a day. How long was it happening for ? Is your host truly "sized" to run an eCommerce website ? Perhaps they can't handle the demands of a busy ecommerce shop on their hosting server(s) ?

It is a very good possibility that the host can't handle the requests. However, this site has been up for almost 2 years, and the type of business it is does not lead to massive growth that would "all of a sudden" crash the site.

In other words the host is probably not "sized" to run a site like amazon, but this site is far from that level of eCommerce.

I also don't know how long it was happening. All I know is the site has been running great for over a year and then today we get a message from the host saying that processes are being spawned and not being released.

I dont' know much about php or ZenCart, so I don't know what to look for, and I didn't customize this particular site so I don't know if anything was changed that shouldn't have been that might be causing processes not to be released.

I also don't know if the overflow is building gradually (for days, weeks, or months) until it boils over or if this is happening all at once.

Here's the message I got from our host:

"Due to a large number PHP processes spawning just from your site, we had
to temporarily one of your scripts( ZenCart index.php ). Whenever a PHP process is spawned,
it should close shortly thereafter.

In this case, the PHP processes were spawned and never released, thus
building up many processes that would not close and severely hindered
the ability for our server to process any other requests. In a shared
environment, this is not acceptable and will need to be addressed as
your site caused severe problems in resource usage. "

One way to help this will be to upgrade to 1.3.7
It will actually stop the persistent connections,

but depending on the server it only take a few mom and pop accounts to bring it to its knees, if its NOT optomized for hi mysql usage

That's a very good point. I could see that being the problem.
I will definitely upgrade and see if that helps, otherwise it looks like it may be a hosting issue. I would think that if this was some type of weird bug or issue with ZenCart that someone would have had the same problem and could provide their insight.
