Limit frontpage category number

I have been searching for some time and can't seem to pin this question down.

Seems simple enough though.

I only want 6 categories to display on the frontpage. I have more then 6.
Currently 7 display.

I assume I have missed something silly.

There isn't a limit to the Categories display ...

That is based on what parent Category you set to display ... if you have 3 subcategories it shows 3 if you have 8 it shows 8 ...

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I think I was misunderstanding the sorting process, i.e. categories, sub cats, etc.

I was creating categories for my items, not subcategories.

I moved all top level categories into one or two subs, then assigned the specific subcategory number via

admin/configuration/layout settings

main page open with category (number of category)

Now I get the six "categories" I was looking to only show on the main page.
