hey folks,
I'd like to add a "guarantee time" field to the product input mask. how could i possibly do that?
i believe it's not an attribute since they are for colors, etc... do i need to modify / create a product_type?
thx in advance,

hey, please help...
some of you sure know how to add extra values / info-fields to products.
would i need to setup my own product_type?
Hi,
I did add a field to my product (composer - we're a sheet music shop). It was NOT EASY. I would suggest you first take a look at whether any of the existing fields are not used by your shop and could therefore be renamed as "Guarantee Time".
If that won't work, then you'll need to pick a field that is similar (or used in a similar way) to the new field you want to add. Try to follow the places that field is used in the Zen files and in the database and replicate it.
Be warned, this is not for the faint of heart but it can be done. You'll need to understand how to manipulate databases in MySQL and also be at least familiar with PHP coding. Finally, you'll need to make great use of the Developers Tool Kit (Admin->Tools) to find all the files you need to modify.
Good luck and if I can help you further, I will try.

well, i do know a bit of php/mysql - that shouldn't be the problem. but i intendet my shop to be upgradeable and hoped, there was a solution for this more-or-less everyday problem to add new fields to products.
this seems to be a major disadvantage of zencart since many shops need that.
anyway, i need to add 2 or 3 fields - and the docs on product_types are awfully incomplete / incomprehensive...
what would be your suggestion on how to add new fields to products?
i'm pretty sure many people had to deal with that already - any hints?
problem solved.
here is the how-to
Hey crazy_chris,
Glad you solved your issue. You outlined the basic steps I did to add composer except I need the composer field to appear on the various listings like all products, new products, search results and category browsing. That was the part that was tricky to figure out.
Hopefully your very nicely laid out steps will help others to do what you did.
