Downloadable products issue

Hello all, I've managed to customize my cart and get pretty far along just from reading all the docs...now I'm stuck tho.

I'm trying to add the filename to a product in the attributes controller but it will not take. 'No Attributes Defined for Product ID#2'

From reading the forums, I have set the permissions of /download and /pub to 777 & have given the file a simple filename and placed it in the download folder. The only other thing I could find was about having 'redirect on' for the server, didn't seem like the likely cause so I haven't investigated.
Why else wouldn't I be able to add this attribute?
