help question Meta tags for every page item?

I see in the "Categories / Products - Top" and every level after that there is the meta tag editor.

I would like to know if its necessary to add tags for every lowest level
( products them selfs ) or is it okay to just tag the folders that contain the products? All folders as the tree lays out have specific names relevant to the folders and products they contain.

In short, all my stuff aint in the same folder! =0)

I will be watching this thread religiously for the next few hours r so.

    Thanks in advance,
    John

No, you do not "have" to add meta tags to all products.

Make sure you have a look at admin>Configuration>Product Info

for some default meta tag settings on your products....

I decided to add meta tags to every product. When I was doing this, I opened a Word document and just copied and pasted the shared descriptions to each product. It was heck of easier than typing each one while still giving those spiders some food.

Just my two cents worth...I am under the impression that using meta tags are getting to be useless. Most crawlers are now using page content more than tagging. Meta's are being misused, content wasn't real...those who use a word rich descriptive text on their pages are going to get a better shot in the future.

I read similar with the exception that both meta tags and content-rich pages were considered, and priority given to each supporting the other.

Does seem like this is in flux at the moment. I'll have to keep an eye out for where this leads.

    Thanks for sharing the info.

I remember reading that now too! Yeah something to do with page content mattering too.
Had a search result come up last night and the whole page was nothing but one incredibly long listing of model numbers each separated by a new line.

Sorry to revive an old thread but have a linked question and didn't want to start a new one where un-necessary, basically, I see in product info where it auto generates meta title, product, price and description, but, I also noticed (when I view page source) on one of my products it has as meta keywords:

<meta name="keywords" content="SAMSUNG HD SERIAL 1TB UDMA 300 7200RPM 32MB OEM [2310-HD103UJ] Game Devices Software Systems Digital Cameras Projectors Accessories/Cables Gadgets Monitors / LCD TV USB Products Components Peripherals Networking Netbooks/Notebooks & Accessories Media & Flash Memory Gift Vouchers ecommerce, open source, shop, online shopping" />
would the search engines still pick this up properly? or do I need to edit nearly 1500 products meta keywords seperately to remove all the un-necessary stuff and add comma's?

    thanks in advance!

    update:

I found that I could add comma's by default between words by editing the meta_tags.php in my overrides folder, only thing now is do I need to edit them all to remove the extra keywords or is that ok?

I have several hundred products and have manually typed meta tags for category and subcategory levels but am looking for an easier method to handle meta tags for individual products.

In Configuation - Product Info I have the Meta Tags selected however, the Keywords that are automatically generated for each product do not have comma's between them.

Any ideas on how I can insert comma's between keywords when the Config - Meta Tags are use for products?

    Any help is appreciated.
