Default Suggestions for textbooks/online courses for html and php coding?

    Hi All,

I am totally bitten and am committing myself to the long endeavor of learing html and php, not just the basics but fully versed which I know is a long term commitment. Can anyone recommend the best textbooks and/or online courses/tutorials for me to learn with? I am in a very rural location and work full time running my manufacturing business so going to a conventional brick and mortar night school isn't practical. There are so many books and online classes out there, what do you seasoned coders suggest?? Any advice is most gratefully appreciated! \

Besides html and php is there any other programming language that you would suggest I learn to help me create custom web programs? What do most web developers use for creating custom solutions for customers' individual e-commerce needs?

    Thanks!!

    Matt

As the application is mostly complete you really do not require full learning/understanding to customize the cart. Unless you are thinking of writing your own.

Web Design is a broad field that includes many things - but my base definition is that there are artists that can create beatifully designed page art/layout - then there is a web designer that converts this art into a workable web page. Normally these are different individuals(something to do with the sides of the brain thing). People who think logically or structured normally are not very adept at the art side of design and the opposite is normally true also.

    So which are you?

Online for most things basic: html, css, php

I am not thinking of writing my own cart, I am totally "bitten" by the zen cart system, but would like to have the ability to customise it and write mods as well as other specialized web applications. This all stems from my own business' needs but I am also looking to the future and realize that it will take some time to learn all of the ins and outs of coding. For instance, we offer custom made products with so many variables that there are literally billions of combinations possible. I want an online quote calculator so customers can choose those options they want and get an instant quote on our site. Currently, they have to send a form to me and I manually figure out the costs which is very tedious when there are a lot to do. I have one nearly completed by a programmer before he bailed, it's written in php, and I am trying to learn enough php coding to finish this project up so we can actually use it on our site.

Besides, I'm a "hey, what does this button do?" sort of person and want to know why something works the way it does.

The beauty is that I am very analytical and logically minded, I pick up straightforward things like computer code fairly quickly and it doesn't put me to sleep whereas my wife is the opposite - she is very artistic and creative so we balance each other perfectly in that respect. And, more importantly, we work very well as a team. She creates the art and then I turn it into a dxf file and clean it up for our CNC machine to carve into our products. I, on the otherhand, can draw stick figures and that's about it.

Thanks for the links, Kobra. I have been to the w3schools site and the php.net site and have been doing their tutorials. I wanted to see if there were any other sites and what the best textbooks are for when I'm not around the computer.

Thanks for the link, Scottb. I have it bookmarked now but I haven't had a chance to look through it yet. It seems as if there is a lot of great tutorials out there, does it make any sense to buy textbooks to supplement the online content or can I get up to full capabilities just through these free tutorials? I really want to hone my skills to the level of a full-blown developer that can do the types of things the pros here do.

If anyone has any titles for good books that I should look out for, please post it.

    Thanks!

    Matt
