Default Change chmod on local server?

I had previously been working on websites online instead of locally on my computer but have recently installed MAMP. I was wondering if you have to change the chmod once you have a fresh installation on your computer locally or do you just change these configurations once you want to make your site live and going through the ftp upload process on to a host server. Sorry if this is a confusing question...I'm tring to phrase this so it's understandable. Thanks

If your localhost server is inaccessible from the "outside world", you don't need to change the permissions for the sake of security.

You probably will want to change them so that the warning messages go away.

You will also want to chmod the specified folders as writable so that you can use the browser interface to upload things such as product images.

In short ... you should still follow the installation instructions the same whether you're operating on localhost or on a public/live server.
