Does the customer receive an order confirmation? i.e. Is any mail going out.
Has this ever worked?
If you use Tools-Send Email to send an email to the admin email address, does it arrive? i.e. Useful to verify above.
Is the Email (Sent From) address in Email Options the same as you Amin Email Address in Tools-Admin Settings?i.e. Are you trying to send mail to yourself?
Is the Admin Email address at one of the free services - Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail etc?
If you enter a different address into Email options - Send copy of order confirmation emails to, does it arrive?
Is Email Options
OK, this has only just recently stopped. i used to get email to say an order had been placed and what the order was, then a seperate email from paypal to say there had been a payment.
this customer never got an email confirmation of her order yet her paypal went through.
The admin email is a gmail account.
Where am i looking for the email options?
Admin->Configuration->Email Options

I am such a techno phoenic and you just scared the crap out of me by me following that paypal link
I have a new version of Zencart that I installed with my hand being held very tightly and being took through step by step.
I have no idea if I have any add ons on.
my url is www.passion4crafts.co.uk
as Douglas Adams would say, Don't Panic.
If your site was working fine, and you have not done an upgrade or similar just before the email stopped working, I think your first step is to ask your hosting company what they have changed to make your site stop sending email, if anything.
Second step is to check the Spam folders on your gmail account to check that the mail is not ending up there.
OK..I shall do that.............and I always panic!!!!
I to am having the exact problem.
I am using 1.37 and all sales are done through paypal with emails being sent to my gmail account.
After reviewing my spam account it appears as though all order confirmation emails being sent are being filtered into my gmail spam account.
Good luck
Unfortunately, the only consolation on Gmail doing such things is that Hotmail is usually worse. It's not just a Zencart problem, it's fairly universal.
If you are with a hosting service, it could be that their mail servers are blacklisted, or if you are sending from a non hosted environment, be aware that most home broadband connections are almost automatically blacklisted.
The other common problem is badly formed headers on the email - wrongly specified encoding and charsets, and mail originating from Apache server user nobody. Check the headers of the bounced mail.
