Download the store in small pieces. a folder at a time. Once you get it all next time it will only download changes you have made

    WHICH files are not downloading,
Sometimes you will have issues downloading files that are set to 644 or 444 for permissions,

also if oyu are using the old Image handler that automaticaly created small med images for you then you cant download or delet ethe images created because the files are then owned by nobody and you dont have permissions to download them

What control panel does your host use? Most hosts offer cPanel, and there is a built in backup function which will zip up your entire account and let you download it. FileZilla is good for file by file downloads.. but I would not suggest any FTP program for a full site download.

Also, make sure you aren't setting it to automatically resume downloads - some files cannot be resumed, which is why you may be encountering that "Critical Transfer Error". I usually get it on htaccess and text files if my internet connection gets flakey
