image problem Best Practice Concerning Product Images

After reading over other posts and scrolling the FAQ I'm beginning to think I'm not really doing anything 'wrong' per say but perhaps there is a better method . . .

Currently as I'm putting images up for the cart I'm just uploading my 420x420 image to the main directory. Now I also have a 100x100 gif. I've seen the medium and large directories but never really understood their purpose or use.

The larger image is important to me as I need to show the details of the product, however if there was a way to make my images not look so 'pixalated' (for the small image) then I'm game for it.

    Thank you in advance.

Install Image Handler 2 - You can use only your larger image and IH2 will handle the resizing for you.

ok, my trial for winzip has expired, got any ideas on how to unzip without winzip? LOL

Also, any suggestions if I were to have several different images of the same product? Say different angles for example?
