sort products by model number

I want me product to default to order by the model number. I can do this if i have th emodel number displayed on the product listing page, but if i remove it then it lists it alphabetically.

I have set "Display Product Listing Default Sort Order" to 1a which is what the model number seems to be on mine, but it doesnt work when model number is removed from the product listing.

Any ideas....

If you don't mark the products_model for display then it is not selected in the select statement and if it is not displayed then there is no Sort Order setting for this ...

You would need to do quite a bit of customization to sort on products_model ... not display the information ... and get the Product Listing to work right ...

What happens when the customer hits Price and then wants to go back to Model?
