Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array in upsxml.php

my user got this error message when click on the 'estimate shipping' button, or 'checkout'

/home/yabycosm/public_html/shop/includes/modules/shipping/upsxml.php on line 262

to reproduce it i had to log in to her account to get this error message. it doesn't seem to be coming up with every account. is anyone able to help me with this?

line 262 in the code is this:

$eta_array = explode("-", $this->servicesTimeintransit[$type]["date"]);

the address is in Ireland, and it seems to do this specifically with Ireland so far.. is there any way to fix this?

I add $eta_array = array(); and it does not help either
