Displaying Subcategories at home page

Hello all-
I currently use ZC v 1.3.8a.

My question: Is there a way to make sure that at the home page all the subcategories are displayed or shown below the appropriate category even before the user clicks on the category link? That is, the category menu at the highest level displays all categories and its subcategories even before an individual category is selected.

Thanks. Regarding installation, do I just FTP the files to the appropriate directory on the server? Do I need to do anything on the admin side to install them?

I haven't used them, but most mods include installation instructions.
