problem with products_options_values as a BLOB

I am writing a tool to download orders and process them. I am trying to use ODBC to download the zen_orders_products_attributes table. The field products_options_values, which contains the text of attributes, is of type BLOB. When I try to get the values from my ODBC connection, nothing comes out. I'm wondering if it's possible to get data from variables of type BLOB from ODBC?

Alternately, Can I change the type of products_options_values to VarChar? I'm not using attributes for anything that needs a size that blob allows, I just wonder if I will screw something else up if I make the change.

You can change the field to TEXT instead of BLOB if you haven't modified the code to store binary data for some reason (which is highly unlikely).
