News feature & batch additions?

Hi guys,

i was wondering is there any way to make an easy-log-in-and-post news message for the main page, i suppose it would work the same as a forum does, in place of where the welcome message and the advert for the zencart manual you would have regular admin posts of updates, news, added products etc.

also my site is for photography, where i use catagorys for events, like a music gig for example, the files would all be 'band name imgXXXX' and i might have upto 50 from one event, all same price/options etc only difference being the image and the number of the photo. is there any way to batch process a whole catagory like this?

im especially keen to know right now about any way to easily add lots of items quickly to a category, where the only variable is the item name (or number in this case with photographs)
