Is there anyone here who has successfully used google apps smtp server?

I need to use an alternative smtp server to my host (host does not allow smtp). I have tried loads of different settings in the Email Options trying to get the google smtp to work (already changed MX records) but no luck. Been searching for an answer for ages, but also no luck.

Or does anyone know of a free smtp server that will definately work?
