Registration & Birth date - problem with the format

I have a small issue when people are trying to register on my shop. When they are asked their details, the birth date has to be entered in the mm/dd/aaaa format.

However, I would like to change that format for dd/mm/aaaa - a more common way to use it in Europe.

How could I change the way the date has to be entered?
