Default Before I upgrade... a question about backup/restore

I am kind of nervous to upgrade because I just finally got everything set up and then here comes a new upgrade! I think I made all my override directories properly and guess it is probably better to do it now than later. But anyways, my main question is....

Id I do a complete backup through my control panel which backups of the file structure, the SQL databases, and basically everything, if I run into a problem then can I just restore everything from that backup and will it work the way it did before?

This question implies you want to upgrade a live site. Don't do it. Never run upgrade on a live site.

To answer you question about the complete site backup. If your control panel is Cpanel, note that there is no restore for a Full Backup.

How do you upgrade then if you have a live site? Should I even bother with it since I have 1.3.7?

Within the Zen Cart download is a folder named docs. Both of your question are answered there.

You create a test site and then merge your changes into overrides of the new files and upgrade your database. Once that's working OK, then you copy the files across to your live site's location, or (my preference ... and a little more advanced approach) use a 301 redirect to point the site to the location of your upgraded and fully-tested site (remembering to bring an up-to-date version of the database across of course).

I do have Cpanel and there is an option to restore the home directory, restore the sql database, and to restore the email. Wouldn't you just restore all of those to restore everything?

This is something I'm wondering about too .......... not that I'm upgrading but I've been developing the site on my local and made so many changes and added mods etc. that it seems a complete dump into the live would be the way to go ...... I just want to make sure that if it doesn't work out well, I can just restore the old db & zc.

I'm assuming the only files I'd need to preserve would be:
    /includes/configure.php
    /admin/includes/configure.php

if you are determined to dump into a live site those two files would be the ones to reserve, however if you upload from downloaded file for the new version the two config files are in a safe edited name where your current ones are not overwritten.

If your using the classic folder for your template make sure you back up the classic template folder as well as your includes/languages/english/html_includes/classic folder.

Then you should be good to go. Just edit the rest to your likings.
