Ask your host why you are not able to connect to the database.
Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.
Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.
What makes you think so? Can you connect to the database using PHPmyadmin?

I think you misunderstand here. The database is running on mysql server, which has nothing to do with FTP. In the matter of fact, you can not connect to it using ftp client. What you see "running fine" is the ftp server, not the database server.

A host that responds late is not a good host.
Anyway, do have Cpanel, or phpmyadmin?
If you can still connect using FTP, can you go to includes/configure.php, scroll down to the bottom of the page and see your current config for your database (mysql) host? Usually it would be "localhost".

the host don`t offer cpanel or phpadmin.... (I am starting to realise that I need a new host).
The bottom of the configurate page is:
// The next 2 "defines" are for SQL cache support.
// For SQL_CACHE_METHOD, you can select from: none, database, or file
// If you choose "file", then you need to set the DIR_FS_SQL_CACHE to a directory where your apache
// or webserver user has write privileges (chmod 666 or 777). We recommend using the "cache" folder inside the Zen Cart folder
// ie: /path/to/your/webspace/public_html/zen/cache -- leave no trailing slash
define('SQL_CACHE_METHOD', 'database');
define('DIR_FS_SQL_CACHE', '/sites/s/sweetlittlemonkey.com/./www/cache');
I want you to look a bit above that, where it says something like this:
define('DB_SERVER', 'localhost');
The reason is, while most servers run a local database server, some don't. In those cases, it can happen that the remote database server dies while the local apache is still running. Of course, even if you have database server running on a local machine with apache, it can still die while apache is still running ^^. It's just an application anyway.
Another possibility: apache can not connect to mysql server because of wrong username/password. Since you said that you didnt touch anything, I assume this is not the case here.
Anyway, without phpmyadmin or cpanel or ssh access to the server, all we can do is to wait for your host.
