Custom info in shopping cart

Hello all,
I am doing a bit of customization to my zen cart installation and need some help to achieve my goal.
I have added some custom information to the shopping cart via editing the tpl_shopping_cart_default.php file. I need that custom information I have added to then be saved to the customers order when they complete the checkout so i can view it from the backend. So when i view the customers order in the admin that custom information is available to me from there so i can complete their order correctly.
Just wondering if anyone knows how i would accomplish this task, thanks in advance.

You might want to look at the comments field, can't remember which page serves it up, and see if that will help. Might be able to modify that instead, or at least use it as your model.
