I just want to remove this. I searched for about an hour in the admin and can't find it. ANyone know where I can just turn this off?

Peek in the Configuration ... Peoduct Listing ... for the setting for:

Include Product Listing Alpha Sorter Dropdown
Do you want to include an Alpha Filter dropdown on the Product Listing?

Note: this was recently fixed to work properly in v1.3.8/a so as not to turn off the Manufacturers or Categories filter at the same time ...
