Default Many attributes and Database bogging down?

I'm interested in coding a special page using the advanced search feature as a template where the shopper can select from a range of read-only attributes and value. I'm not a great coder, but it looks like the query and layout wont be too hard. Here's the real question:
If I add 5 or 6 attributes with 3 to 8 values each to 500 products, will I bog the system down really badly? If the system can handle it, will that particular search page bog down trying to read through all that?

NOTE: READ ONLY are just that ... they are for information purposes only and are not added to the cart or the order ...

On a properly optimized server, unless you are over 50 to 80 attributes on a single Product, you should not experience any significant slow downs ...

Yes, that's the idea. They are informational; used to help my customer select their plants. The attributes don't change, can't be selected one over the other and won't affect price. I'm considering combining this with a modified advanced search feature to achieve a "plant picker" that will allow customers to come up with a short list of plants suited to their climate, sunlight condition and whatever specific parameters they want in the plant; fragrance, color, etc.
I'm also considering category, subcategory, sub-subcategory, etc. to achieve the same thing. It wouldn't take any custom coding but might be awkward. With a smaooth dynamic dropdown or sidebar menu system it could be very quick and easy.
I'm too late to do it for this spring season; already out of time. I'm looking at possibly putting it all together this fall. Some of the other features I need have been coded since I was last here. I'm also watching the roadmap for the checkout process upgrade. That's a big deal for conversion.
I'm so glad that this group is continuing to make progress. When I check in at the Old Workhorse Cart community, nothing is ever happening. Sad, really. It was great in its time but failing to march forward means falling behind.

Attributes are not really searchable without a lot of work to be done ...

I am not sure if you can do this with your descriptions or utilize the keywords as they too are searchable ...

There's difficulty with using the standard advanced search setup. If a product mentions that it is good for zone 6 through 10 and grows 4 feet tall, then a search for zone 4 will turn up this product even though it's not good for them to grow. If i try this, the attribute for zone would have the values 6,7,8,9 and 10. The advanced search would have check boxes designed to query the attributes.
It's a cleaner setup for my customers but would be challenging to code.
The category, subcategory setup is already in place. It would involve huge cross-listing of products but could work fine.
I'm assuming zen can have unlimited subcategory depth and unlimited products cross category listing. I have a tiny Zen shop running now but i haven't spent much time looking through to see about making it work for my main business. So far I've found (or been shown) that Zen covers pretty much everything I'm after.

Check the Downloads ... I am not sure to what extent it has been developed, but I thought I saw an Attribute search add-on ...

I found Product Filter by Attributes. The contributor seems to have "left the building". It's a starting point, at least!
