Default Probs. With Mercury & ZC E-mail

General E-mail Problem On Local Machine

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hello there,

Many thanks to everyone who makes this forum what it is.....

Just installed ZC, and am really looking forward to working with it. I've got one major issue at the moment that I've spent a number of hours trying to crack.....

After following the manual word for word, I tried to send a test e-mail from the XAMPP config page (www.example.com etc etc), through Mercury..... I get the error message

"Error! The message was not successfully sent!".

Now I'm sure that Mercury has been setup properly as I can send e-mails localy from within the Mercury admin program.

Also when trying to setup a demo customer account on ZC (as suggested by book) after filling in all require field I get a message

"Email Error: Could not instantiate mail function. Please check Admin->Configuration->Email Options->Email Transport."

Now I've tried the PHP handler method and also direct SMTP using my smtp server (mail.fasthosts.co.uk) again with no luck.

I've knocked out windows firewall incase there is a port blocking issue but still no joy!

Any got any ideas? It seem a shame to stumble at the first hurdle so to speak!

    All the best,
    James

    Hi James,

Do make sure that Mercury is running before you attempt to send emails from your local store for testing.

If that fix does not solve your problem, could you let me know what Zen Cart and XAMPP version you are running? Also let me know what are the settings you have for the fields covered on pg 73 of the book.

    Thanks.

    Hi Canopy,

Many thanks for the reply. Sorry should have stated....

    ZC - v1.3.7.1 (fully patched)
    XAMPP - v1.4.16

    c:/windows/system32/etc/hosts file has been altered....
as have the Mercury INI files.....

Yes Mercury was running, but I think the problem may be more fundimental than incorrect settings in the e-mail section of ZC admin. Manily becouse I can't successfuly send e-mails from the XAMPP screen either.

Mercury is shown as active in the XAMPP control panel, but when I go to the XAMPP page through expolorer (i.e www.example.com/xampp) and check the 'status' tab it shows 'SMTP' as deactivated.

    Any ideas?

Many thanks once more, and look forward to your responce.

    All the best,

    James

Have you run the port checker batch file?

I had similar problems when using 1.6.5 but these were solved by changing a couple of ports and switching off IIS admin.

    Start Apache
    Start MySQL

Run portchecker and note whats using what port.

    Run Mercury

Run Portchecker again and see if Mercury is shown as using any ports.

    Hello ALFO,

Thanks for the reply, Ok, ran portchecker without Mercury running; port 25 is 'free' and when Mercury is running Mercury's path is shown next to port 25. It's kind of what I expected but not what I wanted to see....

So I'm still no closer really to finding this prob.

Thanks for your time.... Any other thoughts?

    Regards,
    James
