HTML editor catch-22

In the HTML editor section, after selecting a file to edit, it reads:
"You can quickly edit this content via Admin->Tools->Define Pages Editor, and select define_main_page from the pulldown."

So then I follow that directive exactly, and end up with an HTML editor section with this message in the editing box:

"You can quickly edit this content via Admin->Tools->Define Pages Editor, and select define_main_page from the pulldown."

and around and around we go. So how do I actually GET the page I want to edit there so I can edit it. Yes, I have set the correct permissions for the file.

What version of Zen Cart?
What server type?
Does html area work in product entry?

I ran into something similar. I had the same problem after I set up my overrides. I needed to edit the files in my custom template folder, not the classic or default.
