free gift by referral code

I want to offer a free gift to visitors with a specific referral code.

They will have options on the gift, so I would like to set it up as a product, or even a couple of products in a category, that requires login and the referral code. They will not be required to purchase anything else, but I want them to go through the regular checkout process so that they can easily add on to the order & have items shipped together.

Can anyone please give me tips on how to do this?
