Default Problem with overide of english.php and down for maintenance setting

    Hi All,
My problem is that I am trying to make changes to english.php.
I have narrowed it down to this:
    When I put "includes/languages/english.php" into "includes/languages/CUSTOM/english.php"
and set down for maintenance to on, the website does not display.
This is regardless of whether I make any changes to the file or not.
I have tried this not just on my custom template but also on the classic template by just copying english.php into the classic overides directory.
Now, if I click the Online Catalog link from within the admin panel I get a blank page with "www.mydomain.com/index.php?main_page=" when normally it would say with "www.mydomain.com/index.php?main_page=down_for_maintenance", if I add the down_for_maintenance manually and refresh the site, it will load as it should. But if I just browse to the site it will not load unless I add "/index.php?main_page=down_for_maintenance".
Once I delete english.php from the overide directory everything works fine.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

As I said, this also happens on the classic template without changing anything,
only copying an unaltered english.php to the overide directory.
Also, this on a clean install with no alterations so when I switch back to the
default template, if it was anything that I altered in my template it shouldn't
    affect it.

    Thanks!

Do not try or worry about the Online Catalog link from within the admin panel.

But when you state "browse" to the site do you mean enter the normal navigation to your site or maybe from a bookmark?

I have wiped and reinstalled ZenCart on my server and it appears to have fixed the problem.

    Hopefully all goes well now!

I wound up having exactly the same problem again almost immediatly.
After a few days playing around I have finaly manged to fix the problem.
It turns out that there were extra lines after the closing tag "?>" in the english.php file.
After removing these it works perfectly!

    For the record:

Those extra lines might have been added by your html file editor when you tried to edit the file.

If you did not ever open the file, then those extra lines were probably added by your FTP software, i.e. the software you used to upload the extra english.php file to the CUSTOM folder.

Sounds crazy but I have had both of those exact situations happen to me in the past. I now use HTML Editor for html editing and WS_FTP Home for uploading. These do not create these extra lines.
