Default vista issue?? adding to files

I am on page 37 of the Zen Cart book, wishing to add a couple of lines to the file windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

I am a windows vista user
    My problem is that having added 3 lines of code when I try and save the file I get the following alert message;

"Cannot create the C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts file. Make sure that the path and file name are correct."

    Windows suggests a workaround

1.Click Start Start button , click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Notepad, and then click Run as administrator.
2.Open the Hosts file or the Lmhosts file, make the necessary changes, and then click Save on the Edit menu.

This does not work for me. Anyone come accross this using Vista??

How essential is adding the 3 lines of code:

    127.0.01 www.myname.com
    127.0.01 mail.myname.com
    127.0.01 myname to come

    to C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts

I ask this as it's in the book (page 37) but not on the online instructions here at this forum?

    As usual thanks Zenners.

I can't speak to any specific Vista issues, but those lines are necessary if you want to have offline access to your store.

Do you have xampp installed in C:/Program Files? If so, you need to install
it in C:/ Been there..done that with trying to edit anything installed under
    C:/Program Files.

You might look for solutions at the author's errata site here:

"Cannot create the C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts file. Make sure that the path and file name are correct."

If that is the actual msg. then the problem is the slashes.

Windows used backward slashes \ in a path whereas Linux uses forward, like you posted.

    Hi eebee,

Did you check to see if its because of the Vista UAC problem which is highlighted on the Gotchas section of our site?
