20% discount for select group of people

i have a product that is called 'duraflake custom blend'. The customer can
pick from 6 different 'blends' a percentage 5%-100%. when they are finished with that part, then they pick a size 1.1 oz - 3 lb. bag.
the product is not priced by attribute.
i'd like a select group of people - who have registered and who are searchable by going behind the front end and finding their email addressses, who have received free samples and paid by zen free charge card, to have a 20% discount on a 3 lb purchase of this custom blend.
do i have to create a separate product or how can i go about doing this properly.
version 1.3.7
when they checkout the price is showing as 37.99 even though if i go to display the product the product price is zero.
i am a bit confused now about how i arranged and set that up --- did that...

In Admin - Customers - Group Pricing , you can set up customer groups and specify a % discount for each. The discount is taken at checkout, and doesn't show on the product pages.

we are talking about a massive amount of people i would have to
have in this 'group'. and i only want it for one product based on size/weight.
sounds like a very private tweaking of the database?. what do you recommend?
perhaps i can better just create a coupon code and send them the coupon information?
