Download a template and follow the installation instructions that are included (usually in a readme.txt or install.txt file)

To change colors you would work with the stylesheet.css of your current template and look for any instances of background-color, background and color

some colors may also be tiled images (for those you would have to create new images in the color(s) you choose.)
