Had to do fresh install - need help!!

When I first started with Zen Cart over a year ago I had no clue what I was doing and applied a bunch of mods without following over ride instructions, etc. Which leads to me to believe that if I do an update from 1.3.7 to 1.3.8 I will just totally mess things up. So I did a fresh install. 1.3.7 is located at www.mydomain.com/shop and the fresh install of 1.3.8 is at test.mydomain.com/shop

So far things are going good there, I'm getting things set up the way I want, etc, BUT I can't seem to transfer my customers and order info over. I've installed the add customer module (sorry dont remember the name) and can manually enter the customer data but can't change the 'date account created' to when they actually created the account and from what I've searched it doesn't seem there's a way to transfer all the order info over?

So my question is, can I update my existing live 1.3.7 without affecting the live store? I will be using a new template, but since i didn't follow over ride procedures with the mods I installed in 1.3.7 will every thing be lost?

And lastly, How exactly would I upgrade without affecting the live store?
