How and Where to display warning/error messages

I edited the shopping_cart.php file to detect certain conditions when I need to display a warning or message to the user. What is the best way to display these messages? I was thinking of displaying it in a similar fashion to the warnings that are displayed upon initial install of Zen Cart and two warnings are displayed relating to changing permissions and deleting the zc_install directory.

Does anyone know how I could display a warning similar to those or another method of displaying a warning to the user.

As of now Zen will send an error message with these 3 results:

1. admin panel/ configurations/ regulations/ Confirm Terms and Conditions During Checkout Procedure
2. admin panel/ configurations/ regulations/ Confirm Privacy Notice During Checkout Procedure
3. On the Product Page, only if you associate attributes to choose from when selecting a product, if set up correctly..
