If you intend on serving the www you should get a hosting account. Even on broadband, your shop on a local willl not load for others very fast, you will not be able with xamp to configure a dedicated IP nor use a SSL Certificate etc etc

I am using Zen Cart as a school project, so the store will not have a "professional" use with many clients, etc. It is only experimental. In this case is possible to have it online hosted in my machine?

If not, there are any free host recomended for this store?

    Thanks

You could try signing up to a public IP service such as no-ip.com, but in order for people to see it, you'll have to make sure you've allowed HTTP (port 80) traffic on your router's firewall, etc.
Setting up a home-based webserver is a topic better discussed on a site such as webhostingtalk.com etc.
