How can I edit the invoice page?

It depends what you want to do. If you want to change the logo, then you can do that by replacing the logo file in the admin and if needed editing the appropriate language file (like for the catalog).

The invoice is built by a page in your admin folder (which hopefully you have renamed) called invoice.php, unless you're using Super Orders, in which case it will be called something like super_invoice.php. You can change it's layout by editing this file.

If you only want to change the text, you do so by editing the corresponding language file in the admin/includes/languages/YOUR-LANGUAGE directory.

I noticed in 1.3.8a that the invoice produced now contains the order status and notes (not present in 1.3.7) -- is this intentional and can it be removed with an override?

Any suggestions? I'd hate to edit a standard file... is this normal to show the customer notified/status/comments box on the invoice in 1.3.8?

No there's no over-ride, you would need to remove it form the relevant file, see post #2.
