Does not matter if I choose a default attribute or not, it keeps on coming up with two radio buttons, both selected.

I think it is a template problem because if I use the preview function in the control panel then the attributes display correctly both for dropdown and radio options.

This is not a template issue. You need to set up the attribute name as color and values and grey, light khaki, etc.
