i am sure this has been posted but i could not find any answer

on the main page above the welcome message is a area in the center that shows links to categories/products. i have turned off all boxes and everything in layout settings but it is still there. when i turn off my categories it is gone

is there a way to turn this off as i just want my product links to show in a side box.
